Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the practice of inserting thin needles through the skin at various points on the body. These specific points belong to a meridian or channel, which often correlates with an organ in the body. When an organ is out of balance or diseased, the flow of energy or life force (known as "qi" or "chi") that travels along these meridians also goes out of balance. Inserting needles at strategic points along these meridians helps to restore the normal flow of qi, leading to balance and wellness in the entire body. For centuries, acupuncture has been used to successfully treat many difficult or "incurable" diseases. Nowadays, it is often used to prevent and treat many common and lesser-known conditions.

Electro-Stimulation

electrostim pictureAlso called e-stim, electro-stimulation involves regular acupuncture plus the attachment of electro-current clips that safely and gently stimulate the needle. The frequency and intensity of the current are chosen based on the condition being treated. This form of acupuncture primarily helps with circulation by stimulating the nerves and muscles. It is often incorporated into treatments that involve acute or chronic pain. Clients should feel light, gentle, steady tapping where the needle and electro-current clips have been inserted.

Cupping and Gua Sha

Cupping picture

Cupping and gua sha are different forms of myofascial release often used to treat pain and acute conditions. Cupping involves placing specialized plastic or glass cups onto an area of skin and creating suction to relax the muscles, improve circulation, and detox the body.

Gua sha is an ancient method of applying pressure and scraping the skin using a massage tool. This technique helps to promote blood circulation, relieve stagnation, and remove excess heat in the body. Gua sha is usually done on the back, shoulders, and neck, but it is not uncommon to receive gua sha on the face, trunk, and limbs. Any small tool with a hard, flat, or slightly curved edge can be used to perform gua sha, including a stone, coin, or spoon.

Tui Na

Tui-na picture Tui na is a form of medical massage originating from China. It is considered one of the oldest styles of bodywork. This therapeutic massage involves applying pressure to stimulate various body areas, including the acupuncture points. Various techniques (rolling, kneading, pressing, lifting, etc.) and pressures are chosen and applied based on the presenting pattern and the client's comfort level with the technique being used. Tui na has many benefits, including enhancing circulation, promoting relaxation, easing tension, and restoring the flow of qi throughout the body.

Dietary Recommendations

Dietary recommendations picture The food and drink we consume are crucial to our mental and physical well-being. Knowing the tastes, flavors, temperatures, and other properties of the food we consume daily will help us make better choices for our health. At the end of the session, Dr. Bao-Tich Nguyen may offer dietary recommendations and lifestyle advice.

Once we confirm a scheduled appointment, we will send you a link to the client portal so that you can conveniently complete the intake paperwork prior to your first appointment. Please make sure you complete the online forms prior to your appointment. This gives Dr. Bao-Tich Nguyen an opportunity to review the information prior to your meeting.

What is your payment policy?

Payment is due at the time of service. We accept all major credit cards, cash and checks. We also accept Flexible Savings Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Accounts (HSA) as payment. If you don’t have a debit card associated with your FSA or HSA account, we're happy to provide you with the documentation needed for you to go after reimbursement.

Do you accept insurance?

We do not accept insurance and are considered self-pay so that we can focus on providing comprehensive and confidential services tailored to your needs without forced treatment plans or goals from insurance companies. We take an above and beyond approach to treat the root causes of your condition and spend the time necessary to achieve your goals for treatment, which may not be covered by insurances.

If you have out-of-network benefits and would like to utilize them, as a courtesy we're happy to provide you with documentation for out-of-network reimbursement.

The way this works: You will be required to make payment at the time of service. Upon request, we will give you a bi-weekly or monthly invoice (superbill) that you can submit for reimbursement for out-of-network benefits. Your insurance company will then send you a check directly with the reimbursement that they are willing to provide. Reimbursement is between you and your insurance company. If you are considering this option it is advisable to contact your insurance company to inquire about your out-of-network benefits prior to your first appointment.

What can I expect from my first session?

First sessions are known as initial intake sessions and are typically longer (90 minutes) than regular sessions (50 minutes). This gives Dr. Bao-Tich Nguyen an opportunity to understand your primary health concerns, learn about your goals, and begin to devise a plan for how to get you there. The first part of the session covers the initial paperwork including the comprehensive intake, chief complaint, relevant medical history, treatment goals, and treatment plan. The second half of the session is the acupuncture treatment.

What should I do before my session?

If this is your first session, please make sure you have completed the online paperwork prior to your appointment. For both new and returning clients, it is important to stay well-hydrated and eat something within a few hours before the session. It isn’t necessary to have a big meal, but a light snack can help the body maintain its energy during treatment to reduce potential symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, or even fainting.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment so that Dr. Bao-Tich Nguyen can easily access the acupuncture points, and more importantly, to help you fully relax during the session.

What is your Cancellation Policy?

If you are unable to attend a session, please make sure you cancel or reschedule prior to 24 hours before your appointment. If you cancel less than 24 hours in advance or do not show up for your appointment, you will be charged $80.00. We want to make sure you understand our policy before you begin working with us. We appreciate your understanding!

Do you provide any other services besides acupuncture?

At Mind Body Connect 360, our goal is to help you achieve optimal health in body and mind. We use a variety of tools and techniques to help you regain and maintain good health. In addition to acupuncture, other services we provide include electro-stimulation, cupping, gua sha, tui na (Chinese massage therapy), and dietary/lifestyle advice. These services are usually not offered by themselves but are rather incorporated into the acupuncture session at the clinician’s discretion, at no additional cost.

Acupuncture FAQs

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the practice of inserting single-use, sterile filiform needles into specific points on the body that belong to a meridian or channel. Each meridian usually correlates with an organ in the body. When an organ is out of balance or is diseased, the flow of energy or life force (known as "qi" or "chi") that traverses these meridians becomes stagnant. This blockage is what leads to ailments in both the body and mind. Inserting needles at strategic points along these meridians helps to unblock these stagnations, restore the normal flow of qi, and thus address many medical problems.

Acupuncture can be used to prevent, treat, or cure numerous health conditions. It is an effective and natural way of restoring balance and promoting wellness throughout the body. Since the body and mind are connected, a healthy body leads to a healthy mind, and vice versa.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, acupuncture is safe if practiced by a licensed acupuncturist. For centuries, acupuncture has been proven to be a safe and effective form of treatment for many acute and chronic conditions. At Mind Body Connect 360, we use new, sterile, disposable, single-use acupuncture needles. All needles that are used during treatment are discarded immediately after each session and are never re-used in subsequent treatments. Therefore, there is virtually no chance that you can contract bloodborne diseases from receiving acupuncture with us. Besides an occasional bruise at the insertion site, acupuncture has no side effects.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very thin, flexible needles made of surgical-grade stainless steel. These needles are much thinner than hypodermic needles. Clients are often surprised by how little they feel when the acupuncture needles are inserted, although it is not uncommon to feel the sensation of a pinprick, a dull ache, slight numbness, or tingling during the insertion of the needle or shortly after that at the site of insertion. These sensations are brief, and any discomfort usually goes away within seconds.

The needles are often retained for 20-40 minutes.

How many treatments do I need?

The number of treatments depends on several factors, including the condition that is being treated and the chronicity and severity of the condition. A common treatment plan for a single complaint often involves 4-6 treatments. On average, we recommend one acupuncture treatment per week, but it is not uncommon to receive more or less than this number.

Who should not get acupuncture?

You should not get acupuncture if you have a bleeding disorder, a pacemaker, breast or other implants, are taking blood-thinning medications, or have a needle phobia. Please get in touch with us if you have any questions about this.

What is the difference between acupuncture and Chinese acupuncture?

There is no significant difference between acupuncture and Chinese acupuncture; they refer to the same therapy that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to promote well-being and relieve various health issues.
